do you have any advice for finding books to read that might be more obscure or lesser known? i look for book recommendations but they’re all very popular books that i already know about

ladyhamlet:

a list of ways I have discovered books before:

  • word of mouth, as in hearing people i admire talk about their favourites
  • browsing bookstores and libraries, taking my time
  • looking up books i already like on goodreads and seeing the ‘similar to this book’ section
  • general internet searching for curated lists that are specific… searching up recommendations not just for an entire genre but for subgenres / time periods / smaller groupings
  • looking up the favourite books of authors i like (they may have talked about it in interviews/ on their site)
  • online forums— ex. in november and perhaps in the months before it, too, the nanowrimo forums are really interesting to look at for book recs and writing advice
  • archives of blogs dedicated to books and fiction!
  • just asking people in my life what they like, what they’ve remembered reading over the years.

hope this helps.

nothing is as tender as annotating your favourite books. it’s like leaving a piece of your heart on the pages for somebody else to find.

lovenotereminders:

Friendly reminder: when people say ‘as long as you tried your best’ it doesn’t mean ‘the best you could possibly have done ever’ it means ‘the best you were capable of at the time.’ Sometimes ‘trying your best’ is just getting out of bed in the morning. Just because you weren’t working yourself to the bone doesn’t mean you weren’t trying your best.
